The Ukrainian folk toy is a particular and vivid kind of decorative and applied art. It may be of interest both to children who are direct participants in a play, and to the adults as effective means of education, and a memory of their own childhood. It is distinguished for its diversified themes, perfect simplicity of its form, structural inventiveness, laconic décor, and emotional contents. This publication acquaints the reader with Ukrainian folk toys made of cloth and threads, clay, wood, grass, straw, and even cheese. It is illustrated on the basis of the exhibits from the Museum of Ethnography and Art Industry under the Institute of Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Lviv), Mykhailo Hrushevsky Museum (Kyiv), private collections, and the author’s works.
