Dreams is a unique recording that brings to life the forgotten violin/piano
works by 19th- and 20th century composers from Ukraine, three of them
repressed by the Soviet regime. The disc is titled after the opening piece
by Viktor Kosenko, which sets the tone for a program infused with mystery,
lyricism, and colourful contrasts. The little known violin works of Kharkiv-
born Serhiy Bortkevych reflect the turbulent drama of his times (Sonata) as
well as a playful musical charm and elegance (Suite). Three noteworthy
folk song arrangements by Vasyl Barvinsky mark world premieres and
represent the composer’s signature style in this genre. The recording
culminates with a short, uplifting piece by Mykola Roslavets, “Morning
Mood.” A wonderful addition to the collection of classical music students
and fans of rare music discoveries.
