Pysanka USA, LLC - Chemical Safety Statement & Disclaimer

PYSANKY USA, LLC is committed to transparency with customers. When you buy Pysanky USA dyes, we disclose any health hazards from manufacturers and distributors of these professional-grade dye powders.

In the art materials industry, traditional paints such as cadmium-based, cobalt-based, and flake white remain popular among fine artists, who often choose these over synthetic alternatives with full knowledge of the associated risks. These artists manage such products with appropriate care and diligence. Others may prefer to avoid these substances altogether, opting for safer alternatives after reviewing available information. All dye products we supply should be used responsibly and kept out of reach of unattended children and pets. We will provide guidelines to ensure safe handling of dyes.

By regulation—and, in some states, by law—Pysanky USA, LLC must include warnings regardless of how apparent or unlikely the potential hazard. For example, California Proposition 65 mandates that products containing any chemicals listed under the “Prop 65 list” be labeled accordingly: “Contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer.” This list includes substances such as alcohol, cigarette smoke, copper, and more. You will find corresponding labels on certain dye packets and highlighted in product descriptions on our website. You may choose to avoid these colors; if you elect to use them, they must be handled with strict caution. To promote safety and best practices, we have compiled recommended procedures for responsible handling:

1.      Wear a certified N95 dust mask when handling powders to prevent inhalation of dyes and replace it with a fresh one regularly. If you work with dyes and chemicals professionally or have allergies or sensitivities, consider upgrading to a quality rubber respirator fitted with appropriate filters.

2.      Clean up areas where powdered dyes are used with a damp cloth, towel, or wipe.

3.      Set up a designated mixing station away from any area used for eating or food preparation. Immediately clean up liquid spills; if left to dry, dye dust may become airborne.

4.      To protect your eyes from dye powder, wear safety glasses or, better yet, protective safety goggles. If working with multiple dyes, consider using a face shield.

5.      Use rubber, nitrile, or neoprene gloves to avoid skin contact with the powders. Never mix or handle eggs in liquid dye without wearing gloves.

6.      Ensure sufficient ventilation when working with powders. Open a window if possible or invest in a small dust collector with multiple filters, changing them as recommended by the manufacturer.

7.      Do not use kitchen utensils for preparing dyes since they are not safe for consumption. If heating dyes in a microwave, buy a separate, inexpensive, or second-hand unit dedicated solely for this purpose. Do not heat food in it. Clean the microwave using wet wipes or paper towels with cleaning sprays such as 409, Simple Green, or Awesome Orange. This is why no kitchen appliances used for dyes should later be used for food or drinks. When cleaning up liquid or powdered dyes, always wear gloves. Keep paper towels, wipes, and coffee filters for straining sealed and dispose of them at a hazardous waste drop-off site.

8.      Store mixed and labeled dyes in a cool, dry place, out of reach of unsupervised children and pets.

9.      Pregnant women should exercise extra caution and consult their doctor before using dyes or chemicals.

10. If you experience any adverse reaction from a product, discontinue use immediately.

11. Allergies and sensitivities vary among individuals and cannot be predicted. Also, never apply powders or liquid dyes to your body. Although this may seem obvious, it is worth stating clearly.

12. Follow common sense, stay attentive, and work mindfully. Avoid dyeing Easter eggs when tired, and do not eat, drink, or smoke during the process.
